February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. 'Flags of Our Fathers' is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company.

I agree, wie really need a movie and TV subforum.

And with the movie, it looks really good.

No doubt going to be depressing as hell though. But probably isnt going to be as graphic as saving private ryan.

I love war movies. I just hope this doesn't turn into a Pearl Harbor. That thing sucked assmaggots.

I'm kind of hoping to see another movie like Enemy at the Gates: Maybe the Anti-communist fear has finally died down in America enough (or been replaced by Terrorist fears) that they'll admit it was the Soviets who won the European theatre.

Neat bit of info, there's goin to be another movie on the SAME battle but from Japan's perspective titled "Letters From Iwo Jima".

And from the folks who've seen this movie so far in the theatre said it was good and is nearly the exact same as the book the movie was based off, which was based off the battle.. etc.

I wish they would have made it on Flyboys. Who doesn't want to see historical canibalism?

Wasn't that photo of the Iwo Jima flag raising staged? My history teacher mentioned they had staged the picture after the initial battle. You can never really trust historical pictures, that's one thing I did learn, you always have to take them with a grain of salt. They never quite show the whole story and they are far too easy to fake.

Wow, I want to see that!
It looks like a really emotional story outlining the media and hell behind war.

Well, the first flag was raised by the soldiers who actually had to fight to take the mountain. However, the first flag was a dinky little thing and there were no photographers around to see the first flag raising. The Marines weren't content with the tiny flag flapping on top of the mountain and decided to raise a larger flag to make it more visible. It was during this second raising that a photographer happened to be tagging along and took the famed picture, and I believe the picture was taken by accident, not staged.

In the movie they were taking the first one down because the flag deserved to be with the platoon, and not with a senator who wanted the flag. So they did a switch.

Great movie, Ira, a chracter, gets drunk a whole lot and kinda funny. cuts bck and forth alot, between the battle and several months after it.

Despite the many WWII movies in the market...I really want to see this. But in the trailer, I noticed that the narrator in the beginning is the General in Saving Private Ryan (The scene right after Omaha Beach, where the colonels are discussing the Ryan brothers' deaths with the General). Just an eerie similarity to the two movies...but I'm sure Flags of our Fathers will be able to distinguish itself from SPR.

EDIT

But it's movies like these that really make me wonder: what is the frontline really like during war? It all just seems so overwhelming...these movies we see probably don't show us 1% of what the reality of war is like, and even if a film managed to show war in its entirity, it's a completely different thing to be there in person rather than in front of a TV screen.
I have a deep respect for these guys...it's a real shame that Vietnam Vets got so much shit.

I just came back from the movie. I liked it and I thought the battle scenes in particular were really well done. At times it was a little confusing (everyone knows soldiers look all the same when they have their helmets on), but in the end I had no unanswered questions.

i know, luckily my dad who is a vietnam vet managed to make a decent living and hes now retired, as for the movie, i liked it, it was a powerful movie, and Ira always being discriminated against, it made my blood boil as i too am of native american descent. My dad told me about the battlefield as he was in a Marines recon infantry squad and saw it first hand. He told me how in the battlefield you can be talking to someone right next to you and the next second hes pulverised into chunks by an explosion and its hard for some people to take it, they were just talking to him one second and the next hes wiped off the face of the earth, war is hell and thats why all vets of any war that have seen the frontlines firsthand are never the same again. Flags of our Fathers was very accurate to actual combat but real life combat is even worse than that, and as stated earlier, there is a huge difference watching it on a TV and being right there in the middle of the mud and death while thousands of bullets and fly past and bombshells go off just a few feet away.

People who go to war never say they are heros, my own father doesnt even like to talk about the people he has killed in combat. But none the less our soldiers are our heros, they give their lives so we may have freedom, they deserve nothing but the best honor and respect from everyone.
