This thread can be sorta considered the hints and tips guide. Contrubte on what you think your good at (heads, feet, expressions, poses and so forth) or contrubte a lesson you learned in the past that you thought was unique, like my shading exercise my teacher gave not to long ago.
Explain it however you want to, draw the guide, or talk us through the process. Got a question. Dont be afraid to ask as well. Tutorials found at other websites may also be placed here.

Tablet, OC, and basic to intermediate knowledge of Photoshop. At least that's how it rolls for me.
I suck at perspective. I can only draw people from one angle and then I still have trouble with certain hand placements

Question: What is the easiest way to do multi-thickness ink lines in Photoshop without having the lines go between super-thick and nonexistant?
Are you using a tablet or mouse?
Tablet looks best if you have these settings:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/benjurafu/PS4.gif
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/benjurafu/PS3.gif
((((stole'd from suta-raito))))
Secondly you might not have calibrated your Tablet pen to your own style...
In Corel (it should have came with your tablet if you got a wacom.. ) whether or not you use corel go to: Edit > Prefrences > Brush Tracking
And follow the instructions. It will calibrate your tablet to how hard you usually press down. The effects carry over to Photoshop.
With a mouse... experiment using the pen tool stroke path multiple times with different brushes.
I hope I was able to help. :3

Nice. Question 1=Hows does computer drawing, colouring, etc. work? This has always aluded me.
Have your lineart be on the top layer and have it's layer properties set to "Multiply." Have the layers underneath it be your colours. If you want to get into great detail, you'll need more layers, which means it'd be a good idea to organize them in folders.

Shading Lesson:
2 Sheets of Paper.
Perm Marker (you'll only use it once its not critical)
2 Pencils (one you draw with turr hur)
Good light (double tur HUR)
With one of the sheets of paper tear it in half. We dont need no neat folding crap. Yet. Now then write your name in the center of your paper in perm marker; write it anyway you want.
Now take the right hand side of the paper and fold it 1 inch (what the teacher said : /) flip it over fold it once more, and flip it back to do another final fold. With the part that is not folded, create a curve using your desk (the name should be facing up to you when curving the paper) Make these folds and curve good or you cheapen the assignment.
With all that bullshit done your paper should be able to stand on the folding. Place that paper on the second sheet and put it underneath your light soucre. Tad da, you should see the wonderful shadows and crap. Draw what you see, (both sheets of paper) For extra fun *places the second pencil on top of the folded paper*. Include that to your work and the shadows it brings.

Actually you might try drawing a picy poo normally then right next to it practice reversing it.
Luckily I don't have this problem cause I switched between left and right in every picture after a certain point... (cause I used to only draw them facing left too >.> )

Instead of clicking the brush tool button press down on it for a second to switch it to the pencil tool, with that you can do pixel art.

I have a question: Whenever I see one of the sketches you guys do, they're usually sketched in blue lines. Do you guys just draw with blue on the computer or is there some way to do that while scanning?
There are three ways to use blue...
First... you can start off with blue pencil and sketch it onto your paper. Many people use non-photo blue colored pencils. I use a Staedler lead holder with Turquoise non-photo blue leads myself.
Second... you can use a tablet and draw directly in the computer, using Turquoise blue as your color.
Third... you can follow this tutorial: Al Mackey's Photoshop Tutorial (http://www.fur.com/~almackey/tutorial/index.html) Pretty self-explanatory. Use New Course for anything Frazbar 7 and higher, use Old Course for 4 to 6. Anything lower, uhm, upgrade.
A lot of us draw in blue on a computer, but there are special pencils that turn up in blue lines, but don't show up on scans (Unless you set the scanner to pick them up) It's just an easy colour to ink over, it's not too hard to tell the difference =3

Just a question: When drawing with a pencil, what different sized pencils are good for sketching and redrawing?
good question i want to know this as well.
though as far as i know is that B is for linearts, HB is for darkening the satisfied linearts, 2B is for the sketching, 3B is for shading, 4B is for shadowing.
but then again, thats not quite accurate so anyone who can post something of it, please do.

Just a question: When drawing with a pencil, what different sized pencils are good for sketching and redrawing?
Okay, since I use a lead holder I use 2mm leads. I use the non-photo blue lead for sketching and the regular graphite (HB) for line art if I need to define my lines before inking.
When I used to draw using mechanical pencils, I used a 0.5mm 2H lead for sketching, and a 0.7mm B for drawing my lines. Really, you just gotta remember this:
H means "Hard". The larger the number, the harder the lead. 9H is the hardest, and therefore the lightest of the leads.
B means "Black". The larger the number, the SOFTER the lead. 9B is the softest and therefore draws the darkest lines... that smear the easiest...
Also bear in mind that if you're going to insist on using wooden pencils, then it would be in your best interest to just go ahead and invest in a good quality pencil sharpener. You can get an electric, but a blade-based is okay. If you can find a desk-mounted multi-sized hand-crank, buy it and install it.
As far as erasers go (because they're going to come up next you just know it), it really depends on the paper you're using and the lead H/B rating. There are three basic types of eraser you want to worry about:
kneadable eraser - Starts off as a block of grey stuff and winds up later feeling an awful lot like a mousse... Good for picking up softer leads and for erasing very odd angles. Doesn't have eraser droppings, so it's easier to clean up after. Drop it on a carpet and it's ruined. Better for your rougher papers as it can get down in the grooves better.
art gum - Looks like a block of chewing gum or beef tallow or something. A harder eraser, it's very good at removing most any lines from medium-roughness paper. Leaves a ton of eraser droppings, though.
vinyl eraser - Those weird white ones that have the paper sleeves, and also tend to be used for "click-advance" eraser pens. They're really good at removing just about any line on a smooth piece of paper... but they do tend to smear the ever-loving crap out of darker lines.
If you're going to be inking and you want to pick up the pencil after you've inked, it's a good idea to go ahead and use the kneadable eraser. Just make sure the page is secured, and you use SMALL circular motions. I can't tell you how many great pieces I've utterly fucked beyond repair by getting over-zealous in my erasing. Also, uh, give the ink a half an hour to dry. It may not NEED a half an hour, but there's nothing worse than inking something only to have the fucking ink smear on you.
Man, I used fuck a lot in that last paragraph.
Extreme helpfulness.
Thank you so much man. I have a very good pencil sharpener (works like an electric one but you have to turn it around manually) but unfortunately I only have vinyl erasers, so I'll look around and see if I can find one.
Muchos thanks man

Alright guys I got a plea. Due to my parents passing I had to leave the school. Which means I had to leave my art class. I really want to try to get better, if you guys got any suggestions, tips or lessons please put them up for me to try and practice with.
My only tip is draw lots and draw often, practice shapes, draw things you see, draw things from memory, hell, sometimes just draw. Every time you draw a line you're practicing, remember that.

Oh yeah, copy the work of artists you admire. I don't mean lay a paper over their image and trace it. I mean look at it and try to copy what they're doing on the page. Look at the details closely. You get a finer sense of what they were thinking, artistically, when you do that. Close your left-side brain out of it as much as possible.
The mistake a lot of people make when they draw is that they draw the same thing again and again, trying to get it right. While sometimes repetition is good for you, most often you want to go someplace unique. You're not out to draw a cartoon, are you? Well, if not then repetition is not useful to you.

Two questions, ye photoshop savvys.
1. How do I make a crop or selection bow a certain size? Can I specify #x# pixels for a selection or crop box?
2. How do you resize an individual layer or selection?
Doctor Zhao

For a fixed size selection box, click the rectangular marquee or crop tool and change the style to 'Fixed Size', then you can set the size of it in the boxes to the right.

To resize a selection, select something, right click it, and click 'Free Transform'. You can also resize the selection box itself by clicking 'Transform Selection' in the right click menu.

You have to install the drivers for your tablet for the sensitivity to work, check your manufacturors website for more info!
As for imagination, I don't need to fuel it... It fuels me =P

http://www.gimp.org/ -- Get it here. Pay attention, you probably have to download GTK+ 2.4, so keep an eye out. Also, the GIMP has a HUGE annoyance, last I checked:
Every window/palette/dialog gets its own window in the start bar. So if you have Win 2K or older, or you're not using the "group" feature of XP, you're going to have one friggin' SQUISHED start bar.

GIMP is beautiful. I use it to resize all my pictures, and I still haven't delved into its deeper regions, though from what I seen it's as versatile as Photoshop without the whole "costs money" thing.
I got a patch called GIMPShop that uses the Photoshop commands, so I can use Photoshop tutorials to aid me in my work.
EDIT: REQUESTING STICKY.

Draw pages upon pages containing billions of headshots.
not really, but draw anything and everything, even stuff you think you'll never ever draw, like lamposts and bins and stuff like that, because one day you'll want to draw them and not always just focusing on things like people will keep you open to new styles and approaches to drawing and such.
but yeah, a mazillion sketchsheets helped me, but dont do what i did and do it so much you forget to finish real pictures!

I can go good for this, as it actually works. Ive been doing the same in Spain >_>
Also, working with 3D has gotten me to think about drawing a little differently, so drawing thigns with "depth" isnt that hard : O

i made a tutorial special for ghost but if any of you find this ACTUALLY find this useful, you can use it but then again id doubt it. (also this can also probably be a little explanation of how I draw =) )
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o187/theGhost888/bodyfigura.gif
little explanation,
first of all, the red line at the beginning of the gif is the 'line of action' or 'the backbone of the character'. this helps guide in making the overall body position.
next is drawing the head and basic stick man figure as base for how your character's position and action.
then, the neck and body is drawn. the horizontal line on the body is the line to guide where his body is facing. the vertical line on the body is to guide where his chest and torso is. circles are the shoulders.
after that, 'hotdog-like' arms and legs are drawn as well as circles on knees and elbows.
basically, draw a 'shoe-like' feet so then you can draw the detailed feet easier and in proportions.
head,
the vertical line is where the head is facing.
the horizontal line is where the eyes are positioned.
for humies/humans, it is best to draw a line from where the horizontal and vertical lines are crossed to the lower part of the circle. this is for the chin.
next is to finish the head by drawing lines from the chin to the cheeks. add eyes, noses and mouth. ears are just behind the eyes (oops i forgot to show that one sorry >.<;; )
hands and arms,
for me, the line is the arm and the circle is the hand. draw lines as the fingers.
legs,
the line is the leg, the large circle is the ankle and the triangle-like is the feet. add lines and curves for where the feet is bend and finish it up by drawing the base of the shoe/feet.
the style i use is basically the same way i draw furries except the head and tail part.

I just got Photoshop 5.0 LE out of my basement because I hear the brushes are easier to manipulate. Being the modern CS2 baby I am, some things in 5.0 confuse me.
Is there any anti-alasing feature in 5.0? All my brushstrokes turn out grainy. As seen here:

This is how the brushes work for 5.5. This isn't exactly comprehensive.. but it should give you a better idea on how things work.
It works the same for higher versions.... but it's too tedious. Yes... the brush interface is infinately more powerful... but I don't need all that. I use Photoshop CS2 for tweaking and finalizing drawings..... but for general purposes... I use PS 5.5

I think what I'm trying to say here is that I come up with an idea, but it turns into ass when I put it to paper.
How do I fix this?
Break the object you want to draw into basic objects (cube, sphere, cone, etc...) whilst doing so keep all the perspective in convergence. That helps me most of the time
I would say more but its 12am and I dont want to cram 8 weeks of drawing from school into a single post

You can cel-shade with pencil, it just takes some hatch work. You can sort of outline the areas you want to shade (lightly) to give you reference then do straight horizontal parallel lines. Try keeping them ALL parallel, if you do this right it looks pretty neat. You can vary darkness by how many lines per inch you use. I like doing this because it's easy. You can cross-hatch too, which is also neat, because then you get TWO levels of darkness essentially. Do what I said to do earlier, except have all your lines going diagonally. Then add another layer of lines that are perpendicular to the lines you already have in the darker areas. Again, you can vary darkness with how many lines you use. If you can get used to hatching cross-hatching they're really fun to do and give some neat results.
If you're bent on getting "realistic" shading, then you might want to look into getting some actual sketching pencils, although you can do smooth works with lots of depth with a good standard 2HB pencil. Just get used to how pressure varies darkness and shade away, then take your favourite finger and smudge it around (not haphazardly though!) to smooth out your shade. Which means that you'll have to be careful how much graphite you put down on the paper when you're shading, because depending on your pencil(s) and paper you could end up getting the damn stuff everywhere and ruining your pic. After you've done that, take an eraser with a sharp edge (preferably a kneadable eraser, those things are awesome) and clean up the picture. Erase any smudged areas that aren't supposed to have any pencil, then take a different finger and smooth the shade out some more (usually just the parts between shaded and non-shaded areas. Oh, and another thing that's neat, you can really go nuts and smudge entire parts to give them "colour." This way you can give them "highlights" by taking your kneadable eraser and erasing the parts that need highlighting. Once everything's shaded I'll usually go over my 'ink' lines again with the pencil to make them sharper, since no doubt they'll end up getting smudged too.
EDIT: If you want I can whip up some images as example if you want, but that'll have to wait a bit.

That's a fantastic drawing. Sadly, that appears to be all hand drawn fur. One hair at a time. The only advice I can give is that if you wish to attempt something like that, work out a pattern. "I'll draw all the hairs that will be going this way first, then I'll draw all the hairs that will be going this way next...." It'll really help out a lot.
I also believe that a lot of the fur was airbrushed over to give the coat a sense of realism. You'll notice how some of the hair seem softly erased.

I'm guessing one of two things is going on.
1. You're coloring on the same layer that you ink solely using the paint bucket tool
2. you're coloring on another layer, but still using the just the paint bucket tool
Eitherway, your'e going to get something like this
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8866/testtx8.jpg
Basically, that white line is from the anti-aliasing around the line (anti-aliasing basically means making the line not have a jaggy edge)
There are two basic solutions.
1. Use the pencil tool for your lines. The pencil tool doesn't anti-alias. However, you get a jagged edges with it.
2. This is slightly more complicated so I'll go in steps.
Step 1: Create a layer underneath your line work
Step 2: using the magic wand selecting tool with tolerance set to 0 and anti aliasing turned off, and contigous and use all layers turned on. Select what you want to color
Step 3: go to Select > Modify > Expand and expand the selection a pixel or two (depending on how thick the lines are, if they're thin, go with 1, if they're thick, go with 2.)
Step 4: Select your paint bucket tool, Tolerance should be 0, anti alias, contiguous, and all layers should all be off. Now click and the color should fill the selected area and ignore the lines

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. The brush tool ALWAYS anti-aliases. You can only turn off Anti-Aliasing on Marqee tools such as the selection box and magic wand tool, and on the fill tool.
Like I said, your best bet is to either use the pencil tool (press shift+b if you have the brush tool selected) or to color underneath it. If you're still having trouble and are willing to send me the PSD I'd be willing to try and see where the confusion is and try to illustrate what you could do.
edit2: grrr, fucking got logged out before I could finish my first edit
ANYWAY
Another thing you may want to try, is make what you're working on bigger. That'll diminish the effect of the anti-aliasing.
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/8258/300pixeljm9.jpg

this is an merely an example
ALWAYS work big and size down. That is to say, if you're looking at your art, and you have the view set to 100%, and you can still see ALL of the art, it's way too small.
A good rule of thumb, is to set up the size so that 25% is what you're going to size it down to.
Anyway, I'm really really tired. Hope this helps.
edit 3: I feel like Columbo... "One more thing"
I picked up another method from the one, the only, Ian McConville. (I just thought of it, it's probably the easiest way to get this done.) One thing you can do, once you're finished inking, is to go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and adjust Contrast to 100% . All of the lines should be crisp now, and you should be able to just use the fill tool on them no fuss no muss. (whatever the fuck muss is)
However, this will produce jaggy edges if you're working small. Jaggy edges will be almost impossible to see if you work big.

OK, I'm using a mac, so the way it looks will be a little different, but it's essentially the same.
http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa95/thegreensquid/alllayers.jpg
ignore the unfinished crap I'm working on.
Now these are the default settings in this pic. They are the bad settings. You don't want these settings.
Tolerance should have a 0 to the right of it. Anti aliasing should be off. And contiguous and use all layers should be turned on.
I'll explain all of these options so that you understand them.
Tolerance has to do with colors. Lets say you use magic wand to grab a bunch of red in an image. But you have varying shades of red. Well if tolerance sort of lets you set a range of colors it will pick. Basically if it's set to 0, it will only pick the specific red pixel that you click on. Which means, if something is a flat red, you'll select that red. If it's shaded, you'll pick up very little of your selection. If it's set to 32, it will pick within 32 colors of that red. So you can select more area of a shaded red more easily. However, the more you tolerance you have, the more you select, and eventually, with too high a number, it just selects everything.
The reason why we want tolerance set to 0 is because we want to deal with only one color, the white inbetween your lines.
Anti-Aliasing... I believe I exlpained. but this applies to the selection marquee.
The reason why we want Anti-Aliasing off, has to do with selecting our colors later for editing. Anti aliasing would smooth out the selection and subsequently the fill. We want nice, crisp fills, and this turned off will give us that.
Contiguous takes in to account lines already put on the screen. Basically, if you turn it off, then draw a circle, then try to select that circle, it will just select the entire page. If it's on, and you click the magic wand inside the circle it will select just the inside of that circle.
Contiguous just makes life easier. Without it turned on, you just select the color regardless of where it is. It allows for object specific coloring.
Use all layers, as it's name suggests, means that you use all layers when you use the selection tool. Lets use that same circle in the previous example. Lets say you have contiguous turned on, but you don't have all layers turned on. Well, if you try to select the inside of that circle, while on a different layer, it will select the entire page. However, if you had "use all layers" on, then no matter what layer you were on, it would always take that circle in to account.
Use all layers also makes life easier. If you had it turned off, you'd have to go between the line art layer, and the color layer selecting and filling. It'd get annoying.
(I'm not sure if I explained these very well. I'm trying my best here.)

Well, if you want to make sprites from scratch this is what I found so far: Link (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50148074/)
For programs you can try MS Paint, or Photoshop using the Pencil tool.
This is all I know so far when it comes to making Sprites

whats a good way to make different hair textures...
Not my idea, but a good one all the same: Go out looking for textures of all kinds. Get inventive with your textures. Like, use marble for a water texture, etc. Maybe, I donno, use like grass or something for hair.
Or you could use some kind of fabricy texture that's built into your program and use the smudge brush.
whats a good way to make different hair textures...
layer upon layer upon layer of colour. They don't all have to be on separate layers, when I use oC I tend to make it all on one layer and carefully do strokes of colour. Also, don't just use lights and darks of one colour, say, dark brown. Throw a bit of gold in, highlight, shade, just go nuts. Make sure all the strokes head towards the base of the hair, and make sure you have only one part or origin so that it doesn't look too confused.

one of the reasons I hate working with colour is because brushes never tend to look how I want them to.
is there any guide on brushes and such for painter or photoshop?
everything I do always either look "OMG super fucking shiney" yknow, like fake anime shit or they look like Im drawing at 3x3 pixels and Ive just zoomed the entire image up
Does anyone else colour only in OpenCanvas 1.1? If so I need some help figuring out how to do good highlights. Steffi showed me a way using add and multiply etc layers, but is there any other way?

I found this (http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) awesome tutorial a while back about that and a few other concepts. Bookmark it, trust me, there's a whole wealth of information that even I haven't even fully internalized yet. (And I found the damn thing years ago, when he was first working on it.)

I'm assuming you want to know what I did to those pictures in the Halo 3 topic? Just place them together as layers and set the layers to Lighten (I believe) on Photoshop. It's either Lighten or Darken, and it will allow the picture to appear over each other with out erasing any needed picture.

I've noticed in some of the tutorials involving tablet settings that there's one called "Size Jitter".
I'm working with CS2 though I've yet to see this particular setting. My tablet's a Wacom X-Pen type if it's any help. *__*
Also, I was wondering if anyone knows a good way of creating wet skin and hair?

I can't really help you with the wet stuff though. Best thing to do would be to look at some photos and go from there. Pick out the most obvious properties of wet textures (highlights and stuff) and apply them in a basic form to what you're drawing.

ok I'm having a problem with a comic I'm making.
before I ink them which do you recommend?
-drawing and inking in the actual speech bubbles into the actual paper
-Or drawing the speech bubbles on a seprate paper and add them on the comic digitally? I will type in the text. (photoshop)
cuz I'm afraid of screwing up and my handwriting sucks

I'd say option C. Draw the bubbles in photoshop and put in the text completely digitally.

I just got my very first tablet a few days ago, since I thought it might be useful for my university course, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for a guy just starting out. So far I've just been doing little doodles and tracing a few things to try and teach my hand to do what my brain wants, and I think I'm slowly getting better, but there are a few specific things that I would really apreciate some tips for if anyone knows anything useful:
Shading on round objects, like cups or balls or stuff, I'm having trouble making the shadow get progressively darker the further from the light it is, usually when I try it end up looking sort of boxy with lots of seperate little segments that get darker as opposed to a smooth transition from light to dark. (hope that makes sense, I'm not great at explaining things)
Basic Anatomy, I don't think I'll ever need to draw anything particuarly detailed, but basic outlines of things like the human body, faces and hands would probably come in useful, but I haven't had much luck finding any decent guides on the internet that don't seem overly complicated.
Also I'd apreciate any useful tips that might speed up my progress, like certain shapes to practice drawing or something.
Anyway, thanks for reading all that, any advice anyone has would be greatly apreciated :D
